Pál Dániel Levente

Középiskolai tanulmányait a budapesti Fasori Evangélikus Gimnáziumban végezte, majd az Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetemen előbb latin–magyar, később magyar–portugál szakon tanult. 2001 és 2007 között az ELTE Eötvös Collegium hallgatója, 2011 és 2014 között az ELTE BTK Irodalomtudományi Doktori Iskola Általános Irodalom- és Kultúratudomány programjának ösztöndíjas doktorandusza volt.

Nyolc magyar nyelvű kötete jelent meg; könyvei külföldön eddig tizenhat kiadásban láttak napvilágot, írásait több mint húsz nyelvre fordították le. A PRAE művészeti folyóirat és kiadó egyik alapítója, másfél évtizeden át ügyvezetője és főszerkesztő-helyettese. 2008 és 2018 között a Gyógypedagógiai Szemle Online főszerkesztője, 2016 óta – kisebb megszakításokkal – a Magyar Cirkuszművészeti Magazin szerkesztője.

2012-ben a European Union Prize for Literature magyar zsűrijének elnöke volt. 2012 és 2016 között az ELTE Eötvös Kiadó (ELTE University Press) főszerkesztőjeként dolgozott. 2020 és 2023 között a Petőfi Kulturális Ügynökség egyik szakmai igazgatója volt; projektmenedzserként többek között (a) The Continental Literary Magazine – az egyetlen (közép-)európai irodalmi folyóirat, amely amerikai terjesztésbe is bekerült – kiadásáért is felelt.

A 2000-es évek elejétől mintegy egy évtizeden át különböző független színházi, fizikai színházi és performanszcsoportok tagjaként dolgozott, színészként és rendezőként egyaránt. Számos jelentős magyarországi színházban lépett fel vagy rendezett. Euripidész Bakkhánsnők című drámájának átdolgozása meghívást kapott a ciprusi Paphos Odeonban rendezett International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama programjába (2004). A magyar–indiai festő, Amrita Sher-Gil életműve nyomán készült kortárs cirkuszi előadásának bemutatóját a New Delhi-i National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) kertjében tartották (2023).

2016 óta a Fővárosi Nagycirkusz dramaturgja, műsorírója és dalszövegírója; több mint hatvan produkció létrejöttében vett részt, köztük a Budapesti Nemzetközi Cirkuszfesztivál versenyprogramjainak létrehozásában. A Gödöllői Szimfonikus Zenekar színházi koncertjeinek dramaturgja.

Rendszeres vendége nemzetközi irodalmi és költészeti fesztiváloknak, valamint interdiszciplináris tudományos konferenciáknak. Meghívásoknak eleget téve – magyarul, angolul, portugálul és spanyolul – tartott felolvasásokat és előadásokat fesztiválokon, nemzetközi könyvvásárokon, konferenciákon Magyarországon és Európa-szerte, valamint egyetemeken és kulturális/művészeti/tudományos programokon Európán kívül is, többek között Brazíliában, az Egyesült Államokban, Egyiptomban, Törökországban, Azerbajdzsánban, Indiában, Kínában, Dél-Koreában, Thaiföldön és Szingapúrban.

Számos magyar egyetemen és íróiskolában tanított; 2011 és 2020 között az ELTE Bölcsészettudományi Karán oktatott kreatív írást. 2024-től részt vesz a Moholy-Nagy Művészeti Egyetem „cirkusz+design” speciális képzésében, 2025 decembere óta pedig a Budapest Cirkuszművészeti és Kortárstánc Főiskola „Cirkuszművészet BA / Konferanszié” szakirányának osztályvezetője.

Irodalmi, művészeti és szakmai munkájáért számos hazai és nemzetközi elismerésben részesült Magyarországon, Brazíliában, Franciaországban, Romániában, Szerbiában, Azerbajdzsánban és az Egyesült Államokban. Jelentősebb elismerései: Medalha Comemorativa (Paraná, Brazília, 2017, 2018); Staféta-díj (Magyarország, 2019); Tudor Arghezi Költészeti Díj (Románia, 2019); különdíj a 13. Nemzetközi Cirkuszfesztiválon (Magyarország, 2020); a zsűri különdíja (AFI World Peace Initiative – 75. Cannes-i Nemzetközi Filmfesztivál, Franciaország, 2022); Lukijan Mušicki Költészeti Díj (Szerbia, 2022); MUSEPAPER Poem Prize (USA, 2023); Spring of Poetry Nagydíj (Románia, 2025); Molla Penah Vagif-medál (TÜRKSOY – a Türk Kulturális Szervezet, Azerbajdzsán, 2025); Térey János-díj (Magyarország, 2025); beválogatták a legjobb magyar science fiction, fantasy és weird prózát bemutató éves antológiába (2025); a Merítés-díj szűkített listájára került (Magyarország, 2025); valamint a Frontier Poetry „Portrait Prize” pályázatának longlistjére (USA, 2025).

Különböző kreatív projektek vezetőjeként is több szakmai elismerést kapott, többek között: HVG Golden Job – Vállalkozói kategória, shortlist (Magyarország, 2008); a Magyar Gyógypedagógusok Egyesülete kitüntető érme (Magyarország, 2009); BLUE PRIZE – RGB Creative Awards (Magyarország, 2020); Ezüst díj – Hipnózis Kreatív Reklámverseny (Magyarország, 2020); Silver in Print / Print Editorial – IDA International Design Awards 2023 (Los Angeles, Kalifornia, USA).

He completed his secondary education at the Fasor Lutheran Secondary School in Budapest, then went on to study first Latin–Hungarian and later Hungarian–Portuguese at Eötvös Loránd University. From 2001 to 2007 he was a student of the ELTE Eötvös Collegium, between 2011 and 2014 he was a scholarship student in the General Literary and Cultural Studies programme at the Doctoral School of Literary Studies, Faculty of Humanities, Eötvös Loránd University.

He has authored eight books in Hungarian, which have been translated and published abroad sixteen times, other works of his have been translated into more than 20 languages.

He is a co-founder of the art magazine and publishing house PRAE, where he served as deputy editor-in-chief for fifteen years. Between 2008 and 2018, he served as editor-in-chief of Gyógypedagógiai Szemle Online (’Journal of Special Education Online’), and since 2016, he has been an editor of the Hungarian Circus Arts Magazine.

In 2012, he chaired the Hungarian jury for the European Union Prize for Literature. From 2012 to 2016, he was editor-in-chief of ELTE University Press, and from 2020 to 2023, he served as one of the manager directors of the state-run Hungarian Petőfi Cultural Agency and Fund, where he also held the position of Executive Director of The Continental Literary Magazine — the only (Central) Europe-based literary journal to have entered distribution in the United States.

After the turn of the millennium, he spent a decade as a member of various independent theatre, physical theatre, and performance art groups, working both as a performer and a director. He has appeared or directed in several major theatres across Hungary. His adaptation of Euripides’ The Bacchae was invited to the International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama at the Paphos Odeon in Cyprus (2004), and the premiere of his contemporary circus production inspired by the Hungarian-Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil took place in the garden of the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi (2023). Since 2016, he has also been the dramaturge, showwriter, and librettist at the Capital Circus of Budapest, where he has contributed to more than 60 productions, including work for the Budapest International Circus Festival. He also serves as the dramaturg for the theatrical concerts of the Gödöllő Symphony Orchestra.

He is a frequent guest at international literary and poetry festivals, as well as multidisciplinary academic conferences. Answering various invitations, he has performed or delivered academic lectures—in Hungarian, English, Portuguese, or Spanish—not only at hundreds of events, festivals, international book fairs, and conferences in Hungary and across Europe, but also at universities and cultural and/or academic programs outside Europe, including in Brazil, the United States, Egypt, Turkey, Azerbaijan, India, China, South Korea, Thailand, and Singapore.

He has taught at numerous Hungarian universities and writing schools; from 2011 to 2020 he lectured in creative writing at the Faculty of Humanities of Eötvös Loránd University. Since 2024 he has been involved in the “circus+design” special programme at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, and since December 2025 he has served as head of the “Circus Arts BA / Master of Ceremonies” class at the Budapest College of Circus Arts and Contemporary Dance.

He has received numerous literary, artistic, and professional awards in Hungary, Brazil, France, Romania, Serbia, Azerbaijan, and the United States. His honors include: Medalha Comemorativa (Paraná, Brazil, 2017, 2018); Staféta Prize for Emerging Theatre Directors (Hungary, 2019); Tudor Arghezi Poetry Prize (Romania, 2019); Special Prize at the 13th International Circus Festival (Hungary, 2020); Jury’s Special Award (AFI World Peace Initiative – 75th Cannes Film Festival, France, 2022); Lukijan Mušicki Poetry Prize (Serbia, 2022); MUSEPAPER Poem Prize (USA, 2023), Spring of Poetry Grand Prize (Romania, 2025), Molla Penah Vagif Medal (TÜRKSOY, International Association of Turkic Culture, Azerbaijan, 2025), Térey Prize for Poetry (Hungary, 2025), selected for the annual anthology of the best Hungarian science fiction, fantasy, and weird fiction (2025); shortlisted for the Merítés Prize (Hungary, 2025); and longlisted for the Frontier Poetry "Portrait Prize" (USA, 2025).
